My name is Georgina Johanson.
I am a Registered Nurse and a Diagnostic Radiographer based in Sydney Australia.

Seeing how much waste is generated from just one case in our hospital lab I sought ways to decrease the amount of recyclables going into the waste stream.

One of the materials easily recovered is platinum from the EP Catheters.

I looked for a company in Australia but could only find ones based overseas.
However, on consultation with the EPA it was found that the tips are a clinical waste and as such a permit to export them is required, whether they have been sterilized or not.
They are also identified as being in the class 6 waste category which places other restrictions on them.

PlatAu Pty Ltd was begun in 2008 to ensure a safe , easy process for the recovery of platinum from catheter tips used in Australia.
We abide by all Australian EPA regulations in the areas of storage ,transport and final recovery. Insurance is provided to cover your staff during the cutting, storage and transport of the tips.

Platinum is such a rare commodity and it requires a large amount of energy to extract just a small amount of it from the earth. The practice of treating it as disposable is very wasteful.
